“Sunny” Days of Cricket

Born as Sunil Manohar “Sunny” Gavaskar on 10 July 1949 in Mumbai, he is considered as one of the best batsmen in the worldThe opener of Indian side in the 70’s and 80’s this right hand batsman had set world records during his career for the most runs and most centuries scored by any batsman. He held the record of 34 Test centuries for almost two decades and it was recently broken by Sachin Tendulkar. He was also the captain of the Indian side, but the tenure was less sucessful which brought no wins in 31 Tests.
Sunil Gavaskar is the first batsman in cricket history to score 10,000 runs. He began his career in intrenational cricket in 1971 against
England . His debut was was not a striking one, where he failed in taking out any excellent batting skills. The1972-73 series against England in India was also not a fruitful one for him, where his performance seriously rose doubts among the critics. But later on he peformed well grabbing a permenant berth in the team for the next one decade and more.
Gavaskar hit his first ton in 1976. In the Australian tour of 1977-78 he scored three consecutive Test centuries (113, 127, 118) in the second innings of the first three Tests at Brisbane, Perth and Melbourne respectively displaying his tremendous batting skills. Gavaskar had led the Indian team on several occasions, but his graph as a captain was less impressive. He had led India to nine victories and eight losses, and 30 draws. Sunl Gavaskar, popularly known as little master complted 10,000 runs in Test career in 1985-86 season. He was also a fine slip fielder and has taken over a hundred catches in Test matches.
The nation recognized his service to cricket by awarding him Padma Bhushan in 1994.
