The United States beat Poland 3-0 at Wisla Stadium in Krakow, Poland Wednesday evening.

The first goal was set up by a 12th minute free kick by Los Angeles Galaxy midfielder Landon Donovan. He earned his 99th Career cap. Later, Fulham defender Carlos Bocanegra headed in the perfectly placed cross inside the near post from the top of the six-yard box for his ninth career goal to give the visitors a 1-0 lead. Poland had fair chances near the half-hour mark. However, Everton goalkeeper Tim Howard saved Jacek Krzynowek’s low shot from the top of the 18-yard box and three minutes later dived to his left to push away Dariusz Dudka’s attempt for a corner kick. Eddie Johnson nearly made it a 3-0 halftime lead, but the Fulham striker’s attempt to capitalize off a Polish defensive miscue resulted in another corner kick, one of six for the U.S. in the first half.

Angela Stanford made 10 birdies and fired a career-best 62 on Thursday to take a three-shot lead over defending champion Lorena Ochoa after one round of the Safeway International.

Stanford, had a bogey-free round at Superstition Mountain Golf and Country Club. She had six birdies in a front-nine 30 and birdied the final two holes for a back-nine 32.

Ochoa made five birdies on a flawless front nine, then found trouble with her first bogey at the 12th. She rebounded with tight sand wedge shots to a couple feet at the 13th and 14th, setting up birdie at both holes. Her second bogey at the 15th was followed by birdies at the 16th and 18th, moving her into second place alone.

Sherri Steinhauer was third after a 66, Karen Stupples, Jee Young Lee and Yani Tseng and Heather Young shot 67s, and Michele Redman, Sophie Gustafson and Na Yeon Choi followed at 68. Three-time winner Annika Sorenstam birdied the final two holes to match Paula Creamer with a 69.
