The main aim of baseball is to score more runs by hitting a thrown ball with a bat and touching a series of four markers called bases that are arranged in a specific order at the corners of a ninety-foot square, or diamond. The players belonging to one team will take turns by hitting while the other team attempts to

Stop them from scoring runs by getting hitters out in any of different ways. The teams switch between batting and fielding whenever the fielding team gets three outs. Baseball: A Brief look into the Rules of the Game

Baseball: A Brief look into the Rules of the Game

Basball arrived into the US through the Britsh and Irish immigrants. The game is believed to have originated in the Ireland a few centuries back. The game of baseball is played between two teams each competing to score maximum runs to win the game. The goal of a game is to score more points, which are called “runs” in the language of baseball. Each team consisting of 9 players, attempts to score runs while on offense, by completing a tour of the bases, which form a square-shaped figure called

a “diamond.” A tour starts at home plate and proceeds counter-clockwise. See the image below. Let us now look how the game of baseball is played.  There are four basic tools of baseball including the bat, the ball, the mitt, and the field. In the game of baseball, the bat is an offensive tool, which is made of either wood or aluminum depending on the game being played. The bat is a long, hard stick, about 2 inches (5 centimeters) in diameter. The handle will be about 1-inch diameter. The ball used in the game of baseball will be about the size of a fist and white with red lacing. The player will wear a glove or mitt, a defensive tool, made of leather. It is worn to aid in catching the ball. It takes various shapes to meet the unique needs of the defensive position of the player. Baseball is played on a field, whose dimensions vary depending on the age of the players.

The game of baseball is played in a series of “innings”, each divided into two halves. At the beginning of each half-inning, the nine defensive players get arranged themselves on the field. One defensive player will stand at the center of the diamond on a designated spot, called the mound or the rubber while another defensive player called the “catcher” stands on the other side of home plate from the pitcher. A play begins with a “batter” standing at home plate, holding a bat attempting to hit the ball and running toward first base, while any “runners” already on base would attempt to advance to additional bases. The catcher within that time catches pitches and returns them to the pitcher.
