Taking in the light smell of a lake or the rich smell of the ocean and its bay is only a part of a windsurfer’s daily thrills. The feeling of capturing the wind and riding it across the water is the real thrilling experience of the extreme sport.
Windsurfing was born out about 40 years ago in Southern California. The extreme sport soon gained its popularity in Europe. Windsurfing is in the process of development. Better equipments are coming out each year.
Windsurfers who have gained expertise in the extreme sport use ocean like a skate ramp. They spin on a dime, ride tremendous curls. Some of the pros even attempt to jump 30 feet or more from the water’s surface. It may sound very funny, but it takes a long time to reach this stage. You need to gain a lot of skill and courage to enjoy the fun and adventurous journey of windsurfing.
So if you are a beginner, it is imperative to learn the basics before any attempt to “capture the wind”.
The very first safety measure is to avoid windsurfing when there are whitecaps (foam-flecked tops of small waves appearing all over the surface when winds are whipping them up.)
Another important safety rule is- take care of your head! Yes, being the most vulnerable part of your body, your head requires utmost protection when performing any kind of sport, especially extreme sport like windsurfing. A small negligence may take a heavy blow from the mast or board. Heavier conditions such as when waves and wind separate you from your board and rig, may be extremely painful. So, take good care of your head. Protect it by wearing a helmet.
This way, the dangerous sport of windsurfing can be extremely safe and a lot of fun!
