Hughes Best Choice for Opener; Feels Mark
![]() |
The Australian cricket legend Mark Waugh believes that the 20-year-old Phillip Hughes is the best choice for the opener. The former skipper feels that he should be given a chance to open the innings for the Aussies side. Waugh said that the fit and firing 20-year-old Hughes is a worthy gamble than Phillip Jacques, for the tour to South Africa.
The former captain added that the team can go in two ways. If wanted, they could choose a younger guy like Hughes. Waugh, who played 128 Tests and was arguably one of the country’s greatest fielders, said that Jacques hasn’t played a lot of Tests
and hasn’t done anything wrong, but would be inclined to take the gamble and pick Hughes. Waugh feels that Hughes looks a young tough player who could put a high price on his wicket and can score runs in tough conditions like he did in Tasmania earlier this season. He had scored more than half of NSW’s runs in two innings at Tasmania. Jaques has been sidelined with a back injury since the beginning of the summer and will play club cricket this weekend before making a comeback for NSW on January 30 in Newcastle.
Waugh is of the opinion that the time spent away from the game was not ideal ahead of a tough tour against a rejuvenated South Africa. He fears that South Africa will take another opener to England so it is better to have both Hughes and Jacques over there. Jacques seems to be the No.1 candidate with an impressive average of 47 from 11 Tests. This includes the last-start century he hit in Barbados.
Hughes, at the same time has scored in the domestic scene a dazzling 658 runs at an average of 59.81. The one dayers will begin on Friday at Melbourne.
