Martina Hingis: The Dalia that Faded Very Fast

Born on September 30, 1980 in Kosice, Czechoslovakia, Martina Hingis was passionate about tennis from her kid days itself. This former World No.1 player, has five Grand Slam singles titles including three Australian Open, one Wimbledon and one US Open in her credit. She also has grabbed nine Grand Slam women’s doubles titles in her career. She had to retire from prefessional tennis due to ligament injuries in both ankles in 2002. She was just 22, when announced the decision to retire. But Hingis made a comeback to professional tennis in 2006 after several surgeries and long recuperations. She became World No. 6 in just a short time winning three singles titles. But again a tragedy was waiting fior her in the form of cocaine test. She was convicted of consuming cocaine, forcing her to go out from tennis for two years. Hingis have stated that she won’t be back into professional tennis even after the ban is over.
Martina Hingis became the youngest player to win a Grand Slam junior title when she lifted the French Open singles in 1993. Martina made her debut into professional tennis in October 1994, and became the youngest player to win a match at a Grand Slam tournament in 1995 by reaching the second round of the Australian Open.
Followed a series of wins, Hingis became the undisputed World No. 1 women’s tennis player in 1997. She became the youngest top ranked player in history and the youngest singles champion at Wimbledon since Lottie Dod in 1887.
But a series of injuries played villain in her career. Hingis had to undergo an ankle surgery in October 2001. She had another ankle ligament operation, this time on her left ankle in May 2002, followed by a series of injuries that forced her to bid good bye to professional tennis. . In her short career, Hingis won 40 singles titles and 36 doubles events and held the World No. 1 singles ranking for a total of 209 weeks.
