Muttiah Muralitharan - Cricket Ball lucky to be spinned
![]() |
Muttiah Muralitharan, often referred to as Murali, is one of the most respected names in the world of cricket. This Sri Lankan cricketer was rated the greatest Test match bowler ever by Wisden Cricketers’ Almanack in 2002 and holds the record for the highest wickets in both test cricket (800) and one day internationals (515).
Born on 17 April 1972 at Kandy, Sri Lanka, Muralitharan is a right-handed batsman and right-arm off break bowler. He made his test debut on 28 August 1992 v Australia and played his last test on 18 July 2010 v India; his first ODI match was on 12 August 1993 v India and the last one on 25 September 2009 v England.
Murali is a regular with the book of world records and attain the unthinkable feat of 800 test wickets on 22 July 2010 from his final ball in his last test match by dismissing Pragyan Ojha of India. In addition to that, Muttiah Muralitharan also attained the feat of highest number of international wickets (1320) in Tests, ODIs, and T20s combined. Muttiah Muralitharan has also obtained 7 or more wickets in an innings against five nations, namely England, India, South Africa, West Indies, and Zimbabwe. If that was not all, Murali is the only player to take 50 or more wickets against every Test playing nation and one of only six bowlers who have dismissed all the eleven batsmen in a Test match apart from Jim Laker, Srinivasaraghavan Venkataraghavan, Geoff Dymock, Abdul Qadir, and Waqar Younis.
