Peru Suspended from Soccer
![]() |
FIFA, the authorised soccer body has decided to suspend Peru from international . FIFA announced this decision on Tuesday because the government is feuding with the national federation.
Soccer’s governing body have granted a time period of one month for both the sides to settle their differences before its executive committee discusses the issue at a meeting on Dec 19-20 in Tokyo. Peru is also barred from the 2010 World Cup.
Peru could also be expelled from FIFA. Even though, FIFA rules prohibit political interference in soccer, it was forced to interfere in the case as Peru’s government has refused to recognize the election of Manuel Burga as president of the country’s soccer federation.
The federation can return to good standing “on the basis of negotiations” with the president and the federation board, FIFA said. The board election was held in October 2007. Burga has refused to resign Tuesday. Burga made his words clear when said that he is not going to submit to blackmail or any kinds of pressures. He added that he has done nothing illegal and finds no reason to run.
Earlier in October, Peru’s education and sports ministry has hit out at Burga, saying that he is to blame for violating Peruvian law and the government has every right to hold him responsible for the offence.
Peru stands last in the 10-nation South American qualifying group. Peru is not to play again until a March 28 home game against Chile, another South American country.
The dispute seems to have made Peru badly. The South American country has already lost the hosting rights for the South American under-20 championship next year. Instead, the tournament will be held in Venezuela.
FIFA has prohibited the Peruvian clubs from playing teams from other countries. Referees and officials from Peru are also barred from international games and soccer meetings.
