Porto punished in soccer match fixing scandal, deducted 6 points
![]() |
FC Porto was deducted six points on Friday for bribing referees in two games during the 2003-2004 soccer season. This has been reported as Portugal’s biggest soccer match-fixing scandal ever.
The two other first-clubs for attempting to fix league matches were found to be Boavista and Leiria. The former was dropped to the second division by the League while Leiria lost its three points. However, all the three clubs denied the charges slammed on them.
According to the latest media reports, five referees were also found guilty in the match-fixing scandal and were subjected to 2 and a half years to six years suspensions. FC Porto was fined $230,000 by the league’s disciplinary committee. Club chairman Jorge Pinto da Costa was barred from the bench during games for two years. However, deduction in the points will not hurt Porto much as it will still maintain a 14-point lead going into Sunday’s final round of the season. Porto will also claim its third consecutive league title.
Meanwhile Boavista was fined $278,000 after being found guilty of trying to pressurize referees in three games during the 2003-04 season. Joao Loureiro, its chairman at the time, was suspended for four years and fined $39,000. Leiria was also penalized three points and fined $61,700, with its chairman suspended for a year.
Porto won one of the two games investigated by the disciplinary committee and played to a tie in the other match.
Porto is headed to a third straight league championship this weekend.
