Rud Gullit: The Dutch War Horse

Rud Gullit, the famous Dutch soccer player and coach was born iin Amsterdam on September 1, 1962. He was a famous famous in professional soccer scenario in the 1980’s and 1990’s, and has also lead the Netherlands side at Euro 88 and 1990 World Cup. Gullit was named the European Footballer of the year in 1987 and World Soccer Player of the Year in 1987 and 1989. Known for his versatile playing style, Gullit earned a lot of fans around the world who still admire hime for his unique foot works.
Born as the son of an Economics teacher, Gullit developed his football skills in his formative years. His deep passion for the game made him famous at the tender age itself making him to move from Jordan to Amsterdam Old West. His It was in the year 1978, that he entered into the professional soccer joining HFC Haarlem. He made 91 league appearances for Haarlem, scoring 32 goals, making him named for the best player in the Eerste Divisie that season. He joined Feyenoord in 1982 for a fee of £300,000, where he made 85 league appearances, scoring 31 goals. He joined PSV in 1985, scoring 46 goals in 68 games making him established as world class player. He then had stints with AC Milan, U.C. Sampdoria and Chelsea F.C. in the career that lasted for next 17 years.
It was in 1981, Rud Gullit became a part of the Netherlands national team. His first internation debut was against Switzerland, a game in which the Dutch lost 2-1. Gullit became the key player of the Dutch side within a short time helping Holland to lift the Euro Cup in 1988. But a dispute with the Holland manager Dick Advocaat in 1993 resulted the end of his 12 years long international career.
After giving up the role of proffessional player, Gullit took up the role of manager of England national team, but had to give up the job in 1997 after a dispute over compensation. Gullit has been married three times and has six children.
