Sorrow Ganguly Ends his Innings; Look Who is Mourning!
![]() |
And at last it happened. Almost everyone knew it was going to happen soon; but when, that was only left to know. Putting an end to all speculations, Dada of Bengal announced his farewell to international cricket.
With the announcement of the retirement of the most successful captain of India, an era of sporting tycoon is coming to an end. Sourav Ganguly’s statement of retirement came just ahead of the Test series against Australia. Just before making his retirement decision public, Ganguly was seen chatting with his team mates well as national selectors Kris Srikkanth and
Narendra Hirwani. Saurav’s decision has shocked the cricket world. This should be read along with the BCCI’s recent comments on VRS plans. It was just weeks ago, Dilip Vengsarkar, the former selection committee chairman had shot his gun saying that BCCI is seriously thinking of introducing VRS scheme for senior players.
Sourav Ganguly was always in news for the past 12 years. In most times, for wrong reasons. His debut into international cricket itself was in company of controversies. But he survived everything with his outstanding performance that earned a lot of supporters around the world. However, the comment by chief selector, Krishnamchari Srikkanth that Ganguly deserves at least one series without any pressure is something to be really looked into.
Sourav Ganguly began his career in 1992 in international career in January 1992 with an ODI match against West Indies in the Benson & Hedges World Series. But unable to perform well, he was thrown out of the squad for next four years before being called up in the Test squad for the England tour in 1996. By scoring a massive hundred at Lord’s and another ton at Trent Bridge, Ganguly silenced his critics. Since then he was a part of the team both in One-Day Internationals and Test matches. Ganguly became the captain of the Indian team in 2000, and emerged as the most successful captain of the Indian side. Under him, India reached the final of World Cup 2003. But again he was shown doors in 2005, after clash of opinion with Greg Chappel, then Indian coach. Ganguly came back to the team by end of 2006 and performed well series after series, giving no gap for the critics to point a finger. But now, he is calling it an end, by saying that it’s enough for him. But now the question comes out, “Who will be the next big fish to move out?”
