Spanish Davis Cup Team Reaches Back Home
![]() |
The Davis Cup winner Spain returned home on Tuesday. The team was seen looking worn out from a night of celebrations followed by a long flight from Argentina. The team consisting of Fernando Verdasco, Feliciano Lopez, David Ferrer, Marcel Granollers and Captain Emilio Sanchez Vicario reached Madrid’s international airport at 5 a.m. local time. There was little fanfare to greet them. Thanks to the early morning time of arrival.
Ferrer told reporters that the country will realise the value of victory in a few days. The team has not taken the Davis Cup trophy along with them, but will arrive at the Spanish tennis federation’s headquarters in Barcelona next week. The trophy’s nationwide tour begins next year at tournaments in Barcelona, Madrid and Valencia.
Verdasco calls it a dream that has come true. He had clinched the winning point in the 3-1 triumph with a five-set victory on Sunday. Spain had faced Argentina in the finals, where stalwart like Rafael Nadal had to withdraw due to knee tendinitis. Verdasco said that they were confident of wining the match, even after Rafa’s withdrawal. The team carried less pressure as they could play more relaxed despite the harassment of the Argentine fans.
Spain will start playing against Serbia in March to defend the title. Albert Costa will be the new coach for Spanish team in the match against Serbia. Spain’s third Davis Cup triumph capped an incredible year for Spanish tennis.
