![]() |
Stefanie Maria Graf, popularly known as Steffi Graf, is one of the most respected names in the world of female tennis. Born on June 14, 1969, Graf arrived on the world stage with a bang and was the second youngest player ranked in the WTA Tour ranking 124th. In 1985, Graff arrived first time in the top ten of the WTA Tour ranking and since then there was just no looking back.
On August 17th 1987, Graff became No 1 in the tennis world and kept her place for 186 weeks until March 10, 1991. The fact that Graff’s fabulous record could not been surpassed by any other player, man or woman, to this date is a complete testimony of her tennis skills and supremacy.
Steffi Graf is the only tennis player to have won the Golden Slam Grand Slam singles tournaments - Wimbledon, the US Open, the French Open, the Australian Open, and the 1988 Summer Olympic Gold. In total, she conquered 22 Grand Slam singles titles and reached thirteen consecutive Grand Slam singles finals and was rated as the best female player of the 20th century by Tennis writer Steve Flink, in his book The Greatest Tennis Matches of the Twentieth Century. Graff was admired for her powerful inside-out forehand drive that earned her the moniker “Fraulein Forehand”. She also had one of the fastest serves in women’s tennis, up to 180 km/h or 110 mph, and was a stylish volleyer.
The right-handed tennis great may have retired in 1999 but she still remains in memories of tennis fans all over the world, which is without doubt the greatest win of Steffi Graf.
