Comments Spain Lifts Davis Cup Title
And at last Spain did it. After a lot of speculations and rumours over the ability to perform, Spain proved that they are the best in the world. The Spanish team grabbed the Davis Cup title for this year by beating Argentina on Sunday. Spain calls it a date with history.
Fernando Verdasco defeated Jose Acasusco by 6-3, 6-7 (3), 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 at Mar del Plata. This helped Spain to own its third Davis Cup title.
The top seed Rafael Nadal was on bench due to injury for a past couple days.
Nadal, winner of a fourth straight French Open trophy and his first Wimbledon title earlier this year, while speaking to Spanish state television, called the day unforgettable. Nadal stressed on the point that Spain has created a history. “Nadal added that this day will the best day of his life and no other day will be ever be able to match with it.
The 22-year-old Nadal, who had thrown out Roger Federer from the No. 1 ranking after a record 237 weeks at the top, had also won Olympic gold moving to help Spain to reach the Davis Cup final with an emphatic 4-1 victory over the United States in the semi final. But a knee injury played a spoil sport making him to move out of the court. Nadal enjoyed the game on TV at his home on Mallorca. With this victory, Spain has brought an end to its 44-year drought without a major soccer trophy. The Spanish team will be back at home carrying the prestigious Davis Cup. According to Fernando Verdasco, it was the day, the team was waiting for. He thanked the people of Spain for their support and faith in the team that has made this win possible. It is the coming days that will say if, Spain will continue its triumph.
