Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo has been voted as England’s Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) Player of the Year. This is for the second time in a row.
Ronaldo had a steep career graph this season. There are 38 goals to his credit this year. Manchester United winger Ronaldo thus beat Fernando Torres, Steven Gerrard, Cesc Fabregas, Emmanuel Adebayor and David James in the annual poll.
“I feel very happy. When you work all season to play good, to do something for the team, to do your contribution for the team and then at the end of the season the PFA give you this award, it is a great moment, it is an honour, a pleasure,” Ronaldo told the media.
“It is a great motivation to carry on like that, working more and getting better.
“I feel very good but it is not just my award, my team-mates have helped me a lot this season.
“They give me good passes to score goals, and I score, but it is a good moment for me.”
Meanwhile Arsenal midfielder Fabregas has been named as Young Player of the Year.
Ronaldo and United are currently preparing for the second leg of their Champions League semi-final against Barcelona.
Former England and Blackpool full-back Jimmy Armfield, 72, still involved in the game as a broadcaster, received the Merit award for his services to the game.

Arsenal gave a dismal performance at the JJB stadium on Sunday. They were held to a goalless draw by Wigan in the Barclays Premier League. This was the gunners chance to make the lead between them an Manchester United to four points, now they are just two points at the top of the table and Man U still have a game in hand.
Wigan is now in 13th position, Bolton is just three behind and has played a game less. Arsenal seemed at a loss, and did not display any of the magic they had on Thursday against AC Milan. Emmanuel Adebayor had the Londoners’ best chance inside the first minute but Latics goalkeeper Chris Kirkland made a smart save to deny him.
Elsewhere on the FA cup scene, there is a bit of shocking results. Manchester United was beaten by one goal to Portsmouth and are out of the scene. It has been a weekend of upsets as Chelsea is also out after a 0-1 score to Barnsley. The FA cup has seen the biggest show of chance, as the four-copeting teams are all considered underdogs. None of the big four teams are in the semi finals this year.

There is something about this kid that dazzles everybody and of late he has matured so much that ManU will have one goal from his boot, every second match. Now that’s consistency!!
Cristiano Ronaldo’s 22nd Premier League goal of the season helped Manchester United claim a 1-0 win over Derby, which lifted them to the top of the table. This position belonged to Arsenal before this game, though. The archrivals Manchester united now hold the first place in the premiership and all because of the due to Christiano Ronaldo and his blooming goal. The Portugal winger latched on to a pass from Wayne Rooney and his low shot squirmed past Derby goalkeeper Roy Carroll from the left edge of the penalty area.
Derby had their hopes alive and were a thorn in ManU’s side till the 76th minute and Ronaldo’s goal. Sir Alex Ferguson must be grinning away to glory, as the result pushes Manchester to the top of Arsenal on goal difference as Arsenal have played an extra match.
