Ian Andrew Healy, nick named as Heals is the famous Australian cricket player who is known both on field and off field for his capabilities. Healy was a key member of the Kangaroos as it enjoyed a sustained period of success. Healy became the wicket keeper to have the world record for most Test dismissals.
Healy’s career as a batsman improved dramatically in the second half of his career. He scored all his four first-class centuries in that time. He led the Australian side in eight ODIs when the regular skipper Mark Taylor was injured.
Ian Healy made his debut into international cricket in 1988 against Pakistan. He was selected as the wicket keeper as the position was a big problem for Australia since the 1984 retirement of Healy’s boyhood hero, Rod Marsh. From then on, Healy was the regular wicket keeper of the side for long years.
It was in 1993; Healy scored his maiden century in Test career. He knocked an unbeaten 102 at Old Trafford against England. In 14 Tests between 1992 and 1993, he stumped ten batsmen while taking 52 catches, which is really impressive.
He led Australia few times, but was unsuccessful as captain. He was the first wicket-keeper to captain Australia in the previous one hundred years.
Since the entry of Adam Gilchrist as the ODI specialist wicket keeper, Healy’s ODI career was in turmoil. Healy finished his ODI career with a world record 233 dismissals, a record that was later overtaken by Gilchrist, Mark Boucher and Moin Khan. Healy ended his Test career with 395 dismissals from 119 Tests. This tally was later overtaken by South African wicketkeeper Mark Boucher and other Australian wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist.
