Peru Suspended from Soccer

Peru Suspended from Soccer

FIFA, the authorised soccer body has decided to suspend Peru from international . FIFA announced this decision on Tuesday because the government is feuding with the national federation.

Soccer’s governing body have granted a time period of one month for both the sides to settle their differences before its executive committee discusses the issue at a meeting on Dec 19-20 in Tokyo. Peru is also barred from the 2010 World Cup.

Peru could also be expelled from FIFA. Even though, FIFA rules prohibit political interference in soccer, it was forced to interfere in the case as Peru’s government has refused to recognize the election of Manuel Burga as president of the country’s soccer federation.

The federation can return to good standing “on the basis of negotiations” with the president and the federation board, FIFA said. The board election was held in October 2007. Burga has refused to resign Tuesday. Burga made his words clear when said that he is not going to submit to blackmail or any kinds of pressures. He added that he has done nothing illegal and finds no reason to run.

Earlier in October, Peru’s education and sports ministry has hit out at Burga, saying that he is to blame for violating Peruvian law and the government has every right to hold him responsible for the offence.

Peru stands last in the 10-nation South American qualifying group. Peru is not to play again until a March 28 home game against Chile, another South American country.

The dispute seems to have made Peru badly.  The South American country has already lost the hosting rights for the South American under-20 championship next year. Instead, the tournament will be held in Venezuela.

FIFA has prohibited the Peruvian clubs from playing teams from other countries. Referees and officials from Peru are also barred from international games and soccer meetings.

BCCI Announces Change of Venues

BCCI Announces Change of Venues

The flexibility shown by the Board of Cricket Control of India (BCCI) seems to have broken the ice over the confusion on England’s tour of India. The BCCI shifted the Test venues to Mohali and Chennai, from Ahmedabad and Mumbai assuring all security measures to the England team. The England & Wales Cricket Board, sources have principally agreed to return to India to complete the Test match-leg of the tour that got disrupted after the recent terror attacks in Mumbai. But ECB will take its final decision only after getting a clearance from their security consultants.

As per the new schedule, the warm-up game that was supposed to be played on December 5-7 has been called off. The series will be kicked off with the first match at Chennai from December 11 to 15, followed by a Test in Mohali from December 19 to 23. But still certain some roadblocks exist for the England squad to return to India within a couple of weeks of their hasty departure. N Srinivasan, BCCI secretary has clarified the shifting of the venues in his media release. The England board will send their security consultant for discussions with the authorities in India before final clearance is given for the tour, said Srinivasan.

Several England players have expressed reservations about their safety in India in the wake of the terror strikes in Mumbai. ECB has made it clear that a decision will be taken only after consulting with the players. Many senior players have shown their desire to pull out of the series.

Meanwhile, BCCI has gone out of their way in their backroom negotiations with ECB as they are in attempts to save the series. Initially, the BCCI had opted to stick to the original schedule, but had to come on track with English side after ECB expressed its displeasure over that.
