The Boony Styled Batsman of Aussies
David Boon, the famous Australian batsman was admired for both his looks and aggressive style of batting. The star batsman of the 80’s and the beginning of 90’s was known over the field for his witty ways of cracking jokes and abiamble behaviour. He was also famous for his off field booze sessions.
Born in a family with strong sports back ground, David Boon was also exponent in Australian football and swimming. David Boon began his career in first class cricket in 1978-79. He made his international debut in ODI, in the third final of the 1983–84 World Series Cup between Australia and the West Indies. His test debut was also in the same year against West Indies, where his performance won applauses.
David Boon was then included in next Ashes tour in 1985, where his performance was a fiasco. His attempts to survive the spin attack was a failure which resulted in the dropping out of the squad in the last two matches. Selected for the Ashes tour of England in 1985, Boon’s batting disappointed. He struggled to cope with spin bowling due to slow footwork and passed fifty only once in the first four Tests, then dropped for the last two. Boon later made his come back to the team for the 1985–86 Test series against New Zealand, where his performance was applaused by the cricket lovers around the world. The Australian cricket team which was in search of an excellent opener found the same in Boon. He joined Geoff Marsh in opening the batting side agaist India for the Test series against India, where his first century took him to the limelight. Boon joined Marsh in opening the Kangaroos side for many years which was considered as one of the best opening pairs of the time in world cricket.
After a long career which includes many milstones, David Boon retired from international cricket in 1995-96. His post retirement stint included playing first class cricket for Tansmania.
David Boon is a currently member of the selection board of Cricket Australia. He was also involved in endorsing some products and was also a cricket commendator.
